January 28, 2010 - Imagine a time when all patients struck by leukemia recover fully. Charles Sawyers, M.D., at New York City's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, has worked to make this a reality by contributing to the discovery of a new type of medication that increases patient survival of chronic myeloid leukemia from only two years to a staggering five-year survival rate near 90%.

December 1, 2009 - Health Resources in Action was recognized for its innovative and effective social marketing practice. The84.org, an online youth tobacco prevention movement, was honored with the prestigious Gold Award from the MarCom Awards.
November 15, 2009 - The Kresge Foundation has awarded HRiA a two-year grant to support the Asthma Regional Council's Healthy Homes Promotion Project.
October 21, 2009 - The 84 Movement, a program of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Health Resources in Action, has awarded 15 youth mini-grants for the 2009-2010 grant period. These grants focus on furthering the tobacco prevention work of The 84, particularly in the area of advancing local policy change to make Massachusetts’ communities healthier and more tobacco-free.

Alcohol Campaign Adapted to Spanish-Speaking Audience
September 3, 2009 - HRiA's Health Communication Services recently adapted a media campaign that originally targeted English-speaking baby boomers to a Spanish-speaking audience. The new campaign, "Viva Más Tiempo por Su Familia" (Live Longer for Your Family, emphasizes the importance of taking care of oneself for one's family.

August 5, 2009 - Despite temperatures in the upper 80's and high humidity, over 360 people participated in a festival in Franklin Park that brought together Boston youth involved in environment-focused programs. Health Resources in Action, in collaboration with Bikes Not Bombs, coordinated an "A Festival for Everyday Urban Environmentalists" which provided an opportunity for participants to network and to learn from one another. July 9, 2009 - HRiA will be assisting in the development of a strategic plan centered on improving access to healthy foods in Dorchester, a low-income Boston neighborhood. The Bowdoin Street Health Center contracted with HRiA's Public Health Policy and Strategy Center for the work.
June 24, 2009 - Over the past three years, youth have been called on by The 84, a teen-focused anti-tobacco movement, to create messages promoting smoke-free living. Anthony Price, the 2009 grand prize winner for his song "Live Life," and Yorling Valdez, second place winner of the most hip brand category for his song "Peligro," recently discussed their experience in the contest and tobacco prevention work with the Neighborhood Network News in Boston.
June 12, 2009 - The National Conference on Tobacco or Health invited HRiA to present The 84, an innovative youth tobacco prevention movement, at its June meeting. HRiA's communications and youth work experts also conducted an oral presentation about youth organizing, focusing on the web and grassroots strategy and showcasing Massachusetts youths' accomplishments in the statewide tobacco prevention movement.

May 26, 2009 - The Paso del Norte Health Foundation in El Paso, Texas has awarded Health Resources in Action the first year of a potentially three-year evaluation grant to evaluate an innovative school health and physical activity program in the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD).
May 22, 2009 - The Medical Foundation, a Division of Health Resources in Action, is proud to be a founding member of the Health Research Alliance (HRA), an organization of nonprofit, non-governmental funders of medical research and training. Collectively, HRA members provide nearly $1.5 billion in research awards each year, funding over 5,500 researchers annually.
May 9, 2009 - Over 200 Massachusetts’ youth and adult allies gathered from across the state to celebrate tobacco prevention accomplishments by youth at a summit run by the Massachusetts Youth Against Tobacco (MYAT). Leaders in the youth tobacco prevention movement also discussed new strategies for the uncertain year ahead, as state budget cuts loom.
May 5, 2009 - Attorney General Martha Coakley's Office awarded over $433,000 in grants to nine nonprofit community agencies and health advocacy organizations in an effort to increase childhood lead poisoning awareness reduce lead poisoning and increase the percentage of children who are screened for lead exposure. The Lead Action Collaborative, a program of Health Resources in Action's Environmental Health group, was one of the grantees.
May 4, 2009 - HRiA’s Health Communication Services will present The84, a statewide youth movement around tobacco control and prevention, at the 2009 National Conference on Tobacco or Health this June.

April 17, 2009 - H. Robert Horvitz, Ph.D., stepped down as Chair of the Scientific Review Committee for the King Trust Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in April after three years on the committee. Dr. Horvitz offered invaluable guidance in selecting members, overseeing review meetings and revising program guidelines.
March 26, 2009 - On Kick Butts Day, a national celebration of youth advocacy, over 150 Massachusetts teenagers met with legislators at the State House Grand Staircase for a high-energy, youth-led event highlighting Massachusetts' youth powerful efforts to prevent tobacco.

February 13, 2009 - The Massachusetts Department of Public Health recognized Ms. Mary White of Dorchester with an "Award for Excellence in Community Leadership" for her outstanding record of public service with the Boston Urban Asthma Coalition’s (BUAC) Strengthening Voices program.
January 5, 2009 - The Dr. Leon Nicks Memorial Minority Physician Fellowship is awarded in the memory of Dr. Nicks, a lifelong advocate for access to high quality health care for all members of the community and a member of the Foundation’s Distribution Committee. Dr. Nicks graduated from Talladega College and Temple University, and received his doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Boston University in 1960. He organized and developed the Multicultural Training and Psychology Program at Boston Medical Center.
Burden of Asthma Study Released
November 25, 2008 - This report represents the most current and comprehensive investigation of asthma prevalence conducted in the New England (NE) region. It examines the health, socioeconomic, behavioral, and environmental predictors that relate to adult and child asthma in the six states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). It was produced by the New England Asthma Regional Council (ARC), a coalition of public agencies, private organizations and researchers working together to address the environmental contributors to asthma.
October 2, 2007 - The Asthma Regional Council of New England (ARC) a program of Health Resources in Action, was one of only 10 groups across the country recognized by EPA at the third Children's Environmental Health Excellence Awards ceremony, which took place on October 11 in Washington, D.C. ARC was honored for their outstanding leadership in protecting children from environmental risks.
April 13, 2007 - The Boston Collaborative for Food & Fitness (BCFF), a program of Health Resources in Action, is a city-wide partnership working to improve community health through a comprehensive initiative addressing issues related to food and fitness. The Collaborative is comprised of dynamic individuals representing a diverse group of sectors, including healthcare, government, education, youth development, food systems, social services and residents.

March 10, 2006 - The Fifth Annual Youth Work Intensive conference, held at the University of Massachusetts-Boston drew 150 youth workers from around the state. Keynote speaker Shannon O’Brien, CEO of the Girl Scouts, Patriots Trail Council and a former state Senator, reaffirmed the important role youth workers play today in the lives of urban youth and in the broader community. Drawing from her own experiences, she explained how essential her extracurricular activities were to her personal development and growth.
