HRiA Coordinates Youth Environmental Festival
Participants discuss environmental issues in small groups.
August 5, 2009 - Despite temperatures in the upper 80's and high humidity, over 360 people participated in a festival in Franklin Park that brought together Boston youth involved in environment-focused programs. Health Resources in Action, in collaboration with Bikes Not Bombs, coordinated an "A Festival for Everyday Urban Environmentalists" which provided an opportunity for participants to network and to learn from one another. The event included performances, activities and presentations.
More than 50 different organizations and community groups were involved in the festival. Youth-serving organizations like the Roxbury Environmental Empowerment Project (REEP) and Sociedad Latina shared their stories on how they are improving their communities by taking on a leadership role to address environmental concerns in their neighborhoods. After learning about these groups’ efforts, the event participants formed small groups to discuss environmental issues like recycling, littering, biking, accessibility to fresh foods and wasted energy in the city and brainstormed on ways to improve them.
The festival was funded by the Boston Youth Environmental Network or BYEN. BYEN is a group of public and private sector organizations and professionals in the environmental education, park stewardship, youth development and job training fields that aim to increase green youth employment and environmental educational opportunities both in and out of school settings.
