April 24, 2010 - HRiA has developed three new publications as part of its ongoing effort to track, understand and address the asthma epidemic in New England. All three were developed through the Asthma Regional Council of New England, a program of HRiA.

The first report, Living with Asthma in New England: Results from the 2006 BRFSS and Asthma Callback Survey, highlights the fact that New England residents continue to have some of the highest adult rates of asthma in the nation. The report also notes that over two-thirds of children's and adult's asthma symptoms are considered to be poorly or very poorly controlled, and 40% of adults with asthma believe that their symptoms are initiated or exacerbated by the work environment.

Asthma: A Business Case for Employers and Health Care Purchasers makes the case for employers to invest in best practices for asthma control through their employee insurance coverage policies and wellness programs. These approaches can save employer's money while increasing employee productivity.

The third publication, Insurance Coverage for Asthma, is an insurance checklist for health care purchasers and policy makers. It details what aspects of asthma care should be covered by health care payers and purchasers based on evidence-based recommendations for quality cost-effective coverage. This insurance specifications checklist is a model tool for insurance payers, purchasers and policymakers across the country and is based on the most recent recommendations from the Asthma Expert Panel at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
